How to Remove Rust from Metal: We Tested Oxidat, the DATACOL Rust Converter

Convertidor de óxido Oxidat DATACOL 250 ml, probado en real por Sancord23 sobre una pieza de metal oxidada

Rust gives no warning: it starts as a superficial stain and, if not treated in time, ends up corroding tools, railings, pipes, or any metal part that could last years longer. At Sancord23, we wanted to check if a rust converter really stops this corrosion, so we tested Oxidat, DATACOL's rust converter, on a piece that was already seriously damaged.

What Oxidat is and what it's for

Oxidat is an anti-corrosion metal treatment in a 250 ml spray bottle. Instead of merely covering rust, it chemically reacts with it, transforming it into a stable, dark layer that no longer corrodes the piece and serves as a base for painting. It's useful for railings, fences, tools, sheet metal, pipes, and any metal structure with superficial corrosion.

How we tested it

To push it to its limits, we weren't satisfied with just applying it to the surface: we diluted Oxidat in water and completely submerged a very rusty metal piece to see if the reaction also worked with more ingrained rust. We let the product work and removed the residue. The result: the rust was neutralized, and the piece transformed from an orange, porous tone to a dark, stable surface, ready to paint.

How to apply Oxidat (normal use)

For daily use, there's no need to go to such extremes. The recommended process is much simpler:

  1. Remove loose rust with a wire brush.
  2. Apply Oxidat with the included spray bottle or with a brush, thoroughly covering the entire rusted surface.
  3. Let it act for a few minutes: the treated surface will take on a characteristic dark tone.
  4. Rinse with water and let dry.
  5. Paint over it once dry, if desired.

Advantages of this rust converter

  • Stops corrosion instantly and prevents rust from spreading further.
  • Saves time: no need to strip or sand the entire surface down to bare metal.
  • Serves as a base for direct painting once dry.
  • Practical spray format, also applicable with a brush.

What you should keep in mind

A rust converter is designed for superficial corrosion and preventative maintenance: it does not replace a part whose metal is already perforated or structurally compromised by rust. In such cases, the honest thing to do is replace the part, not treat it.

⭐ Sancord23 Verdict: 8.5/10 — Highly recommended for preventative metal maintenance
